A food diary you can use on an ordinary day
A useful food diary helps you remember what you ate and notice patterns. Start with the amount of detail that answers your question, whether that is a meal photo, a short note or estimated nutrients.
Quick answer
Record the meal, approximate portion and any context you want to understand. Add drinks, sauces and snacks when they matter to your question. You can use the copyable template below or review and save photo or text meal estimates in Saura.

Copy the headings into a note or spreadsheet, or print this page from your browser. The example row shows the level of detail; it is not a recommended meal plan. You can leave the numbers out and still keep a useful record.
| Time / meal | Food and drink | Portion or preparation | Optional note |

| Breakfast | Oatmeal, yogurt, berries; coffee | Oats weighed dry; yogurt from package | Was this enough until lunch? |

Choose photo, text or a detailed entry
A photo is useful when you want a quick visual memory of a mixed meal. A text note can capture a sandwich filling, an ingredient hidden under a sauce or a drink outside the frame. A detailed ingredient entry is useful when you have a recipe and measured amounts.
In Saura, take a photo or describe a meal, review the estimated ingredients and portions, correct anything missing and save the result. Image estimates are uncertain, especially for oil, dressings and food depth. They are a draft to check, not a measurement.
Keep the diary consistent enough to learn from
Write entries near the meal when possible. For a homemade dish, note whether you used raw or cooked weights and how many portions the batch made. For a package, record the amount eaten rather than automatically using the label's serving.
Look back at a few days for one question at a time: whether lunch needs more staying power, where fiber-rich foods fit or which dinners are easy to repeat. An incomplete entry can still help; there is no need to recreate an entire week from memory.

- Record a forgotten item when you remember it, without turning it into a judgment.
- Choose one practical change from the pattern you notice.
Protect the information you record
Food records can reveal personal routines and health information. Keep a paper or spreadsheet diary somewhere appropriate and share it only with people you choose. Review an app's privacy policy and deletion options before saving personal details.
Tracking is optional. If numbers or logging create anxiety, a simple meal photo, a grocery routine or support from a qualified professional may be a better fit. A diary does not diagnose a food intolerance or medical condition.
Nutrition values and photo results are estimates. Check ingredients and portions before saving a meal.
